Process design brings direct value to your organisation as it starts with definitions of key processes. Knowing them has these benefits:

  • Activities that support these processes add value; those that do not are wasteful.
  • They help implement your strategies to reach your goals. They make sure you have processes to implement all of your strategies.
  • Understanding your key processes is necessary in order to apply technology leverage to its best effect.
A detailed process map can help reduce everything from cycle time used in manufacturing, to early defect identification and the processes required to address these. One of the great contributions that manufacturing management has made to the management of services are the techniques associated to mapping processes.

Process mapping is helpful, both for the design and reengineering of manufacturing and service processes.

A process map visually depicts the sequence of events to build a product or produce an outcome. It may include additional information such as cycle time, inventory, and equipment information. It also refers to activities involved in defining exactly what a business entity does, who is responsible, to what standard a process should be completed and how the success of a business process can be determined. Once this is done, there will be no uncertainty as to the requirements of every internal business process.
